Jane is a writer, journalist and presenter who appears regularly on radio and TV. She is the author of three best-selling novels and a non-fiction book - Wannabe a Writer? - featuring contributions from a wide array of big name authors and journalists from Jilly Cooper to Frederick Forsyth to Michael Buerk with a foreword by Katie Fforde, which has been published to wide acclaim.

As a freelance journalist she has written for The Guardian, The Daily Express, The Sunday Express, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun and numerous women’s magazines. Regular spots include a humorous weekly column for her local paper, a monthly column for BookTime, and a regular advice piece for Writing Magazine where she is the “agony aunt.”

Not in the least shy and retiring, JWJ is not the sort of writer to remain in her garret shunning publicity. She has shared her lack of cooking prowess with the nation on Ready, Steady, Cook, been screamed at on Kilroy and attempted to have her hair dyed the same colour as her book-jacket on The Salon. Other TV credits include Just for Starters, The Russell Grant Show, The Heaven and Earth Show, Loose Lips and The Wright Stuff.

Jane has also presented for both BBC Radio Kent and the BBC’s Politics Show and she has chaired panels at the Guildford Book Festival. More recently she interviewed Amanda Ross from Richard & Judy in the Electric Theatre, Guildford, as well as the actress Helen Lederer and the comedian Julian Clary.

A lively and energetic speaker, she gives humorous after-dinner talks and lectures on her life as a writer, her experiences of the buy-to-let market – which her first novel was based on, the art of self-publicity and achieving personal goads either as simple entertainment or for inspirational/motivational purposes. Engagements have include various charity groups, dining circles and writing conferences and the Federation of Small Businesses.

Her motto is: never pass up the opportunity to be the centre of attention
Wannabe a Writer?

Have you got a book in you? And should it stay there?
For everyone who’s ever thought they might like to be a writer – this talk is for you. Where do you start? How do you finish? And will anyone ever publish it when you have? Drawing on her experiences as a writer, journalist and Writing Magazine’s agony aunt, Jane leads you through the minefield of the book world with advice on everything from how to find an agent to the best way to combat “Writers’ Bottom”. In her own unique, hilarious way, she tells you everything you ever wanted to know about becoming a writer – and a few things you didn’t!

How to make things happen and get what you want

We all dream of a fairytale ending to our hopes and dreams but the only way to be sure of one is to write it yourself. In this highly inspirational talk, Jane shows how success is a matter of tenacity, self-belief and never saying die until you’re dead. Drawing on her own experiences of trying to get published as an unknown, she shows you how to go about achieving your ambitions and have some fun along the way …

How not to be a landlady

Since 1995 Jane has bought up five derelict properties and converted them into flats with a view to renting them out and making a fortune. Ho, ho, ho – she knows better now. In this funny, informative speech she shares her experiences of the Buy-to-Let market that formed the basis of her first novel RAISING THE ROOF. Police raids, stolen goods, bailiffs on the warpath, tenants on the game and even a couple who tried killing each other (“it cost two grand to get the blood off the walls”), Jane has seen it all. Hear her before you buy!

Confessions of a Media Tart

Jane would like to assure those of a squeamish nature that she keeps her clothes on throughout this talk! Instead she tells of the lengths she’s gone to in the name of publicity. Including anecdotes about her appearances on Ready, Steady, Cook; Just for Starters; The Salon; Loose Lips and the documentary where they asked her to take her clothes off (!), Jane has lots of amusing snippets about the media today and what you have to do to sell a book or two!

Don’t cry over spilt milk – write about it

Jane talks about how she broke into the magazine market by drawing on her own experiences and turning them into saleable short stories. In this hilarious set of personal anecdotes she tells of the day her son locked her in a cupboard, what happened when there was a rat in the garage and how crashing the car made her money. A fascinating insight into the truth behind a fiction writer.

The Pen is mightier than the Sword – especially when you’re having a domestic.

Jane tells of her life as a newspaper columnist and contemporary novelist and how it opens up whole new ways to get even.

“My husband responded, as he does to all crises, by turning purple and jumping on the spot. And – as usual - blaming me. Once, I would have seethed quietly, or at full volume, railed at the unfairnesses of man and very likely thrown something. Now, I simply trot straight to the computer…..”

A very funny look at writing as therapy and getting your own back.
