The owner of Owlets Antique Jewellers of Hythe, Kent, Alison is a full time businesswoman whose work takes her all over the country and abroad. An integral part of Hythe High Street, Owlets also runs an extremely successful online business.
A pioneer of eBay since 2003, Alison’s internet name Msowl99 is widely recognised as one of eBay’s top sellers for jewellery, with over 1000 items for sale in the eBay shop ‘Antique Jewellers’ at any one time.
Alison’s online endeavours extend to regular ‘tweeting’ where she has over 8000 followers keeping up to date with the latest dealings and gold prices. She regularly updates her blog titled ‘A Deal Around Every corner’, detailing the unusual and interesting circumstances that come with trading Antiques, in particular when scouting items abroad, which Alison regularly travels internationally for.
As an ambassador for Ann Harvey clothing, Alison is a tipster on their website offering style advice to ladies from all over.
Alison Chapman has been involved in the antique trade virtually all her life. Born in 1961 to antique dealer parents who owned The Den of Antiquity in Hythe, Kent. Alison started working aged 5 as a tea and coffee maker, whilst examining her parents’ latest purchases after school and became fully involved in the family business aged 18.
Alison formally took control of the shop aged 23, at the same time as starting a family. The Den of Antiquity became Hythe Auction Rooms and the shop was moved to Hythe High Street and renamed Owlets, a pet love of Alison’s beloved older sister Jenny. Tragedy struck in 1994 when Jenny died, leaving Alison with four children of hers and Jenny’s two, whom Alison has raised as her own ever since. With a large family of 6 children under 11, Alison concentrated her efforts on her home and the shop and Owlets has gone from strength to strength.
Alison is also very involved with the RHDR - Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, of which her husband Danny is a director and general manager. This is the smallest public steam railway in the world and hosts regular events including weddings, organised by Alison. Just recently she opened a brand new children’s play area at the New Romney station, which has been a great success.
Alison is also a trustee of the charity Age Concern and regularly involves herself and her business in local fundraising activities in between her jam-packed family, filming and travelling schedule.
Alison is a great advocate for women being able to work and raise a family if they so choose. She is also a clothing ambassador for Ann Harvey and gives fashion tips on their website. She is currently awaiting a date for fashion shoot with them for the Daily Mail, Prima and She magazine.
